These days there is no excuse to suffer sadness alone as many clinical professionals such as cognitive behavioral therapists and psychiatrists can help with the problem. Apart from the various anti depression medicine, there are a number of medications available that doctors prescribe to their depression patients. Today after many years of research and study, depression can be beaten but this does need an early diagnosis for this but unfortunately for some people the cost might not make it possible. It is now understood that cognitive behavioral and interpersonal therapy can be very successful at helping sufferers of depression as they actually attack the root of the problem.

Luckily both types of treatment can work in, medically speaking, a short time period often in less than twenty weeks marked improvements can be seen in the depressed patient. Before getting started on any medication, the patient must first get themselves to a reputable doctor; get a diagnosis of which type of depression they are suffering from: whether it is clinical, manic or another type. Being prescribed the most suitable therapy and depression medication is necessary owing the different types of depression and the various ways to deal with them. There is actually a surprisingly wide variety of medications available to help treat those who are suffering from depressive disorders.

There are three main groups of medication including the tricyclics and the more modern and commonly used selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors and the monoamine oxidase inhibitors. Side effects are the real problem and can be worse than the condition they are treating this is why the tricyclics are not used as much today. Sometimes, doctors actually find it more effective to mix up these medications, depending on the needs of the individual. So the patient may find themselves on more than one type of medication to help alleviate the depression.

There may be a little trial an error while the doctor decides on the best dosage level for the patient. It is important that the patient does not try experimenting with their depression medication as it could have disastrous results and should be left to the doctor involved. The patient must also learn that sedatives and other anti-anxiety medications are not anti-depressant drugs and should not be used as substitutes. There are often occasions where these types of medications are given along with others to help offset other side-effects but should never be confused as the primary anti-depressant drugs.

Their purpose is to help calm the nerves, which is why depression medications are still required to be taken by the depression patient. Many people prescribed with tricyclic medication will experience some of the more common side-effects. Although the side effects can actually cause the sufferer to lose their ability to function in normal life, unless this happens, many users are happy to put up with the side-effects. In any situation like this the first course of action is to report it to your physician as soon as possible.
